Why Do We Care

Fewer than half of U.S. kids today live in a ‘traditional’ family. Rapid changes in American family structure have changed the image of our children. One of the largest shifts in family structure is this: 34% of children today are living with an unmarried parent—up from just 9% in 1960, and 19% in 1980. In most cases, these unmarried parents are single. However, a small share of all children—4%—is living with two cohabiting parents. Based on current research fewer than half (46%) of U.S. kids younger than 18 years of age are living in a home with two married heterosexual parents in their first marriage. This is a marked change from 1960, when 73% of children fit this description, and 1980, when 61% did….

Families are important. They nurture us. They teach us. They protect us. They serve as our primary caregivers. When families are strong, communities thrive. We also understand that there’s no such thing as a perfect family. At some point, we’ll all be affected by one hardship or another. While no one is impervious to the strains of family life, not all families have the resources to deal with them. In many cases, some of those challenges are just too difficult to handle alone. That’s why we’re here.

With our friendly and well experienced staff PAP has committed itself to a sustainable, long term vision of creating and cultivating a community of loving, caring, and capable families. Because of the hard work of our staff and volunteers, we’ve partnered and works collaboratively with Shelters, Homeless Housing, Churches and School to help offered our communities families the tools to become better mothers, fathers and children.
